Synergy & Essential Oils - Is 1 + 1 > 2?

ReThinkOil Blog Synergy & Essential Oils

What is Synergy?

The definition of synergy: The interaction of elements that when combined produce a total effect that is greater than the sum of the individual elements, contributions, etc.; synergism.

Herbal plants contain dozens of natural components in varying percentages, all designed by Mother Nature to work together synergistically.  It is this “natural synergy” that determines the overall efficacy of the final preparation.

Synergy can involve protection of active substances from enzyme degradation, facilitate transport across barriers such as cell walls, overcome multi-drug resistance mechanisms or provide other signals to the host’s cells that result in higher efficacy than with isolated components.(1 , 2

Synergy has been shown to exist in essential oil preparations.  When Ginger essential oil was analyzed, 4 components were shown to provide 97.7% activity.  “Despite the fact that these components represented a small portion of the total, the overall effect was 66 times that calculated from a summation of the individual ingredients” (3)

The power behind 100% pure Oregano oil is dependent on the synergistic combination of the naturally occurring constituents contained within the plant, working together as mother nature intended.
