Biofilms are structured communities of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, and sometimes parasites) embedded in a self-produced protective matrix. This matrix helps organisms attach to surfaces, form communities, and shield themselves from antimicrobials and immune defenses. Persister cells are dormant or slow-growing cells within these microbial communities that can survive antimicrobial treatment without being truly drug-resistant. Once treatment is removed, some persister cells may reactivate and help repopulate the infection site.
